Charleston Samu Rii Marquis

“It is a great honour for me to have been one of the first dance, fitness and Pilates educators in Austria, and it brings me so much joy and happiness to witness how the dance, fitness and Pilates movement in Austria have developed into such a vibrant and dynamic social engagement platform.”

CSRM

Awareness for What Really Is

The fundamental purpose of my work is to help people develop the will to be awake so as to become aware of what is actually going on. One cannot effectively do before one is awake enough to become aware. And to be aware is to see, feel and know it, as it actually is, and then to be clear about what needs to be done before one does it. The will to become aware is in itself the beginning of the end of „sleep“!

Body-Awareness Explorations

I am a body-awareness trainer, dancer, choreographer, performance motivator and Pilates educator. I was born on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Lucia and grew up in London. I studied dance and Pilates in London and the USA. The core of my knowledge, however, does not come from any institutions but from direct contact with human problems; studying, exploring and researching; seeing possibilities where supposedly there are none. I have given countless workshops and seminars in hospitals, therapeutic schools and studios all over Austria, and participated as a guest teacher in Germany, the United States and Bermuda.

Establishing an Innovative Approach to Pilates

In 1990 I founded the Body Contrology Studio, the first Pilates studio in the German speaking realm. In 2000 I established Bodyhood© Pilates, which is recognized as teaching an innovative and revolutionary approach to the works of Joseph H. Pilates. Unprecedented, scientific and intuitive learning techniques are combined with the brilliance of the Pilates method as a form to give clarity and deep insight into learning and understanding the Pilates method holistically.

Where Teaching Reflects Magic

As a result of my deep respect for the human body, I also integrate different teaching techniques such as those of Moshe FeldenkraisMatthias Alexander and Gurdjieff. This, amongst other things, established me as a specialist in solving many diverse types of movement difficulties; kind of a combination of Sherlock Holmes and Imhotep. Every now and then during teaching I feel like a magician concocting my magic potion or like an alchemist flamboyantly mixing my secret ingredients in order to transform them into a new creation. The most fun of all is when I see that “A-ha!” look in my students’ eyes as their understanding opens up and reflects itself within their bodies. That is the magic I yearn for. Nothing is more satisfying than those moments.

Free University Concept

I believe that knowledge is everywhere and it belongs to whoever is awake enough to pursue it. So, one can then respectfully incorporate whatever works in one’s work and throw away what doesn’t. Every second gives us the opportunity to learn and to connect to a greater pool of knowledge.

Provoking, Passionate & Authentic Guidance

Charleston Samu Rii Marquis is regarded as one of the most innovative and authentic teachers of dance and bodywork in Austria. He is now known as a master teacher of dance and Pilates with more than 30 years of teaching experience, and happens to be the one who introduced the Pilates method to Austria.

He has the innate ability to inspire his students to follow a path towards a relentless pursuit of truth and excellence. His patience and understanding, especially of the human body, have brought positive results to the most unusual body types and personalities. He dazzles, provokes and inspires his students with his unmotivated passion. “The solution to our problems is in the being, not in the doing, because we create the problem; the problem doesn’t create itself”, he would often say.
